Designing Cities for All – ‘Designer by Default’ at Pakhuis de Zwijger (2022)
In 2022, I had the opportunity to co-design and moderate a special episode of Designing Cities for All at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam. This was a major milestone—an invitation to shape and lead a conversation on neuro-inclusive design in a space dedicated to social innovation and urban development.
Pakhuis de Zwijger is a cultural and debate center known for tackling pressing social issues through design and discussion. Being part of their program meant challenging mainstream narratives around design and advocating for a future where neurodivergent perspectives are not just included but centered.
For this event, I designed a format that did more than just present my theory, Designer by Default—I created a space where neurodivergent individuals could take the spotlight and showcase their work. Moderating the discussion, I made sure their voices were heard, their expertise recognized, and their contributions valued.
The panel explored how lived experience shapes design, how traditional design frameworks often exclude neurodivergent thinking, and how embracing Designer by Default leads to stronger, more inclusive environments. To ensure an accessible experience, we intentionally designed the space to meet various sensory needs, reinforcing the idea that inclusivity starts with the design process itself.
This event was a proof of concept—an opportunity to demonstrate what happens when neurodivergent people are not just part of the conversation but leading it. Presenting at Pakhuis de Zwijger was a defining moment, affirming the power of neurodivergent-led design and the need for these conversations to shape the cities of tomorrow.
